How to Generate a Barcode Online

Creating a production-ready barcode with PixDok takes only five simple steps:

1

Select a Barcode Format

Choose the barcode type matching your application (e.g. CODE 128 for shipping labels, EAN-13 for consumer products, or UPC-A for North America).

2

Enter Your Value

Type or paste the numeric digits or text. PixDok validates the syntax in real-time and calculates required checksum digits automatically.

3

Customize Appearance

Open the customization panel to fine-tune bar height, bar width, margins, human-readable text display, alignment, and color scheme.

4

Preview Instantly

The vector preview renders the barcode live in real time, letting you verify proportions and readability before downloading.

5

Download or Print

Export your finished barcode as SVG, PNG, or JPG, copy the raw SVG code, or send it directly to your label printer with one click.

Which Barcode Format Should I Use?

The best format depends on the data characters you need to encode, the physical label size, and the scanning equipment in your distribution chain:

Barcode Format Typical Use Data Encoding
CODE 128 Shipping, logistics, inventory, asset tracking Full ASCII Alphanumeric
CODE 39 Industrial, government, defense, internal identification Uppercase Alphanumeric (A-Z, 0-9, symbols)
EAN-13 Global retail consumer products & point-of-sale Numeric (12 or 13 digits)
EAN-8 Small retail packaging (candy, cosmetics) Numeric (7 or 8 digits)
UPC-A United States & Canada retail products & POS Numeric (11 or 12 digits)
UPC-E Compact North American retail packaging Numeric (6, 7, or 8 digits)
ITF-14 Master shipping cartons and wholesale trade packaging Numeric (13 or 14 digits)
ITF Industrial identification, warehousing, tickets Numeric (pairs of even digits)
MSI Shelf price marking, grocery inventory management Numeric (0-9)
Codabar Medical specimens, blood banks, libraries, air freight Numeric with start/stop characters (A, B, C, D)
Tip for Beginners: If you are creating custom barcodes for internal warehouse storage, boxes, or office equipment, CODE 128 is universally recommended because it supports letters and numbers in a compact space.

What Is a Barcode?

A barcode is an optical, machine-readable representation of data using varying parallel line widths and spacing patterns. Optical scanners, laser guns, and smartphone camera sensors read these reflections and translate them into binary data for point-of-sale terminals, warehouse databases, and inventory software.

Because different symbologies employ distinct mathematical parity algorithms, a string valid in one format (such as CODE 128) may not be encodable in strict retail symbologies (such as EAN-13 or UPC-A).

What Is a Barcode Quiet Zone?

The quiet zone (or margin) is the clean, unprinted margin surrounding both ends of a linear barcode. Scanners rely on this blank zone to calibrate background brightness before reading the start and stop character patterns.

PixDok automatically applies an optimal quiet zone to ensure standard barcode scanners can read your generated labels effortlessly.

Barcode Generator for Printing & Best Practices

When printing barcodes onto adhesive labels, thermal paper, or cardboard, maintaining symbol integrity is vital for dependable scanner readability:

1. Use Sufficient Size

Avoid scaling barcodes down too small. Laser scanners require sufficient bar width (X-dimension) to distinguish individual bars.

2. Maintain High Contrast

Use solid black bars on a pure white background. Avoid low-contrast color combinations such as red bars (which disappear under red laser scanners).

3. Protect the Quiet Zone

Ensure that borders, text boxes, and packaging artwork do not infringe upon the left and right margins of the barcode.

4. Avoid Distortion

Never stretch a barcode non-proportionally in image editing software, as altering line thickness ratios prevents decoding.

5. Choose Vector SVG

Download the SVG format for commercial printing. Vector graphics retain mathematically crisp edges at any print resolution (DPI).

Barcode vs QR Code: Which One Do You Need?

While both barcodes and QR codes are machine-readable optical symbols, their architectures serve different purposes:

Linear 1D Barcode

A one-dimensional sequence of bars and spaces designed to encode serial numbers and product SKUs.

  • Ideal for retail point-of-sale checkout scanners
  • Widely used in logistics, warehousing, and shipping
  • Requires specialized handheld scanners or laser guns
  • Encodes short alphanumeric strings (up to ~30-50 chars)

2D QR Code

A two-dimensional matrix of pixel modules capable of encoding rich data in horizontal and vertical directions.

  • Instant scanning directly with standard smartphone cameras
  • Encodes long URLs, contact vCards, Wi-Fi keys, and text
  • Supports built-in Reed-Solomon error correction
  • Ideal for marketing flyers, menus, and consumer websites

Yes. Click the "Print Barcode" button to launch your system's print dialog. PixDok formats the page specifically for print media with high contrast and optimal quiet zones.
CODE 128 is the ideal standard for alphanumeric data. It supports all letters, numbers, and symbols while maintaining high data density and compact physical length.
Use EAN-13 for products sold globally, or UPC-A for products distributed in the United States and Canada. Note that for commercial retail sales, you must obtain legitimate barcode numbers from an authorized GS1 provider.
CODE 128 uses variable bar and space widths to achieve much higher data density and supports lower-case letters. CODE 39 is an older standard with wider bars that requires more horizontal space, but is still used in legacy industrial equipment.
EAN-13 (International Article Number) is the global 13-digit standard used on consumer goods and retail packages scanned at checkout registers worldwide.
UPC-A (Universal Product Code) is the 12-digit standard retail barcode format primarily used on store products and supermarket point-of-sale systems across North America.
ITF-14 barcodes identify master trade items, shipping cartons, and wholesale boxes in logistics and freight environments. Their thick bearer bars protect against partial scans on corrugated cardboard.
PixDok places no restrictions on using the generated graphics for business or commercial labeling. However, retail products sold in stores must carry an officially assigned GTIN / GS1 identification number.
It depends on the selected format. While CODE 128 accepts arbitrary numbers and letters, retail formats like EAN-13 and UPC-A strictly require 12 or 13 digits with valid checksums. PixDok alerts you in real-time if a value does not meet the symbology specification.
Common reasons include: printing too small, low contrast (e.g. gray or red bars), insufficient quiet zone margin, paper distortion or stretching, or low printer resolution. Ensure your barcode is printed crisp and at adequate size with clear blank margins.

Important Information About Barcode Identifiers

Notice Regarding Commercial Retail GTIN / GS1 Identifiers:

Generating a barcode image with PixDok creates a machine-readable graphic of your input data. It does not register your product with retail authorities, assign an official GTIN/EAN/UPC identifier, or guarantee retail acceptance. To sell goods in commercial retail marketplaces, obtain an official company prefix and registered barcode from GS1 or an authorized standards body.
